Officers of the Migration Department and Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, as a result of joint complex operations, detained 6 citizens of foreign countries — Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, and Egypt. This was reported by the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the ministry, it was established that the detainees were staying in the country without legal grounds, in violation of the Georgian law “On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons.”
“They were abusing the timeframes provided by the asylum procedure and had been residing in the country for years without legal grounds.
The detainees did not make use of the deadlines set by the expulsion decision, which implies voluntary departure from the country. As a result, the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs made the decision to detain these individuals.
At present, the detainees have been placed in the Migration Department’s Temporary Accommodation Center for the purpose of their subsequent deportation to their countries of origin,” the statement said.
