The Georgian national basketball team defeated Montenegro 101–74 in Tbilisi in a qualifying match for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The victory is of great importance for Georgia in the fight for a place at the World Cup in Qatar. The national team now has four wins and shares third and fourth place with Montenegro.
Georgia’s captain Tornike Shengelia was the game’s top performer, scoring 24 points. Goga Bitadze scored 23 points, Sandro Mamukelashvili 17, Rion Brown 12, and Giorgi Andronikashvili 9.
Georgia maintained the lead for almost the entire game. Montenegro tried to reduce the deficit mainly through three-pointers and mid-range shots. However, in the fourth quarter, the Georgian team finally broke its opponents’ resistance and secured a convincing victory.
Georgia will play its next match away against Portugal on August 31.
After the first stage of the qualifiers, the teams from Groups A and B formed a new six-team group. All points earned in the first stage were carried over.
Only three of the six teams will qualify for the World Cup. Therefore, the remaining six games will be decisive. Spain is considered the main favorite in the group, while a fierce battle is expected for the remaining two qualification spots.
