The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Natalia Gavrilita, announced on February 10 that she was resigning after a year and a half in office. According to her, the country is entering a new phase in which security is a priority. The resignation of the head of government entails the resignation of the entire cabinet of ministers, the Moldovan service of Radio Liberty reports.

President Maia Sandu said she would hold consultations with parliamentary factions and then nominate a candidate for prime minister.

In her speech, the prime minister noted that her government had been fulfilling its duties for a year and a half in a constant crisis, but at the same time, it was able, in particular, to achieve recognition from the EU of Moldova's status as a candidate for joining the European Union.

Among the likely reasons for the resignation is a possible struggle between different factions of the ruling party. In addition, the resignation came amid reports of a plan to destabilize the situation in Moldova, which Russia is said to be trying to implement. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned this plan the day before, the Moldovan special services confirmed that they are studying the information of Ukrainian colleagues.

In Moldova, in recent months, there have been mass protests against the policies of the authorities. President Sandu and her supporters accused pro-Russian forces of organizing provocations.

The government of Gavrilitsa had to deal with a sharp increase in the price of Russian natural gas, as well as the consequences of large-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine. In Moscow, Chisinau was often criticized for its pro-Ukrainian position.
