Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia – Lelo coalition, who was arrested on charges of attempting to commit a terrorist act, has been found guilty by the court.
Under a ruling by Judge Giorgi Gelashvili, the politician was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The case concerns an incident that took place in the registry building of the Tbilisi City Court, where officers of the Court Bailiff Service (Mandaturi Service) prevented Elisashvili's actions, after which he was arrested at the scene by law enforcement officers.
For reference, Elisashvili was charged under Part 1 of Article 19–323 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which covers the attempted commission of a terrorist act. The offence carries a prison sentence of between 10 and 15 years.
In addition, Elisashvili has been charged in a separate episode under Part 1 of Article 323 of the Criminal Code, which concerns a terrorist act—namely an explosion, arson, an attack on a person, the use of weapons, or any other act committed for terrorist purposes that creates a danger of causing loss of life, significant property damage, or other grave consequences.
This offence is also punishable by imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years.
