Zurab Abashidze has been elected chairman of the Tbilisi City Assembly. The vote took place on May 23 during a session of the Sakrebulo. Abashidze’s candidacy was supported by 26 members of the assembly.
From 2017 to 2021, Abashidze served as Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kazakhstan. Since 2021, he has been a member of the 8th convocation of the Sakrebulo, representing the "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia" party.
Previously, Abashidze was a member of parliament and part of Irakli Alasania’s "Free Democrats" party.
The position of chairman of the Tbilisi City Assembly became vacant after Giorgi Tkemaladze was appointed Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi.
