Today marks the 40th day since the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II.

At Sioni Cathedral, to pay tribute to the Patriarch’s memory, citizens have been coming in a continuous stream every day throughout these forty days.

The locum tenens of the Patriarchal throne, Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri), together with the clergy, will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m., after which a memorial service for the Patriarch’s soul will be held.

The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, was buried in Sioni Cathedral, in accordance with his own wishes.

A new Patriarch must be elected by the Holy Synod of the Georgian Patriarchate no later than two months after the Patriarch’s death — by May 16.

At the Synod meeting scheduled for April 28, three main candidates will be identified, after which a session of the Synod in an expanded format will be convened, where the new Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church will be elected.
